Telco Systems Guides Rural Communities Through Broadband Stimulus Plan

FOXBORO, MA—April 22, 2008—The recently passed economic stimulus package includes $7.2 billion for broadband infrastructure projects to be administered by the NTIA and the Department of Agriculture. Because the timeline for funding broadband stimulus projects has a goal of awarding all $7.2 billion by end of September 2010, applications for broadband infrastructure funding will need to be executed quickly and efficiently.

Of the $7.2 billion, the Department of Agriculture has received $2.4 billion for broadband projects in rural communities, Because the USDA has been administering loans and grants for telecommunications projects since 2001 through the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), the agency is well equipped to start to accepting applications within 60 days.

As a RUS-accepted supplier, Telco Systems, a BATM company (LSE: BVC) and a leading provider of Carrier Ethernet access solutions for the growing demand of consumer interest in broadband Internet access, has been working with a number of rural communities on their installation of FTTH solutions. Telco Systems will use this expertise to help rural communities who are about to begin projects that require a variety of installations and a line of products that meet such requirements.

Products particularly geared to manage the opportunity created by the stimulus plan include:
  • Telco Systems’ T5C Ethernet switches which provide aggregation capabilities up to 10G in a fiber-based network.
  • Telco Systems’ EdgeGate gateways which provide broadband Internet access, Internet phone service (VoIP), IPTV access to rural customers.
  • Telco Systems’ T-Marc family of Ethernet CPE devices for commercial and business customers.

These products enable service providers to offer a single-source complete FTTH and FTTB end-to-end solution for deploying community broadband networks utilizing RUS loans and grants.

“Having a complete line of RUS-approved products is a significant step in easing the design of a total end-to-end solution for RUS funded broadband networks,” stated Irit Gillath, vice president of product line management for Telco Systems. “We believe that the RUS certification of our product lines better equip us to work with underserved rural communities and municipalities to fully capitalize on the grants from the stimulus package.”

USDA Rural Development Telecommunications program offers many programs for financing rural America's telecommunications infrastructure, and is dedicated to increasing economic opportunity and improving the quality of life in rural communities.

Further information on rural programs is available at a local USDA Rural Development office or by visiting USDA's web site at http://www.rurdev.usda.gov.
